It’s been a hot summer in Madison and what better way to keep your temperature rising than with a hot show on the newly refurbished Memorial Union Terrace? On Saturday, August 13th the Terrace will host the Jimmys along with musical compadres from New York, Joe Duraes and his band the Skills who are currently on a Midwest tour run.
The Jimmys have been riding high on their sensational album Hot Dish, released earlier this year. The album has done very well on the blues charts and has helped vault the Jimmys to new heights. The Jimmys swept the blues category at the 2016 Madison Area Music Awards winning for Performer of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year for “Lose That Woman.” The Jimmys have also been named the Artist of the Year multiple times and their individual winners have been dominating the Instrumentalist categories for years. Hot Dish is also up for another award in the Contemporary Blues Album category in the 2016 Blues Blast Music Awards. You can vote for the Jimmys by going here. Joe Duraes and the Skills are rising up on the East Coast and elsewhere. Duraes has been a solo artist releasing Ebb and Flow in 2013 before forming the Skills. A second album is now in the works. The Skills also feature bassist Steve Geller who has strong Madison ties having played in Bobby Messano’s band. Messano’s CD, Live in Madison received a First Round Grammy Nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2010. Geller was also a sub for Davy Jones’ (from the Monkees) touring band, which has led to the release of their current single, a cover of the Monkees’ “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” which you can check out here. The band delivers high-octane melodic rock and is fresh off an opening slot for the Gin Blossoms. There are numerous videos you can see here, including live performances at the Paramount in New York. You can catch a close-up view of Joe Duraes and the Skills at the Frequency on Thursday, August 11. They’ll be headlining a show that includes relative newcomers on the Madison scene, Convincing Jane, which feature bassist extraordinaire Gary Chin whom you may remember with his stint in the Dorothy Heralds. Also on the bill are Distant Cuzins agroup of high-schoolers who are fresh off of their win at the Rockonsin state-wide music competition for high school and middle school garage bands. Their performance earned them additional Summerfest performance slots amongst other goodies. Remarkably polished for a group this young, they will set the bar high at the Frequency.
